Rest is a skill. A skill that you have to exert effort to develop.
Just like any other skill.
We Already Know How to Work
But we were never taught how to pause.
Most of us were raised in systems that reward only productivity and output, so it makes sense that rest doesn’t come naturally.
Working is actually the easy thing for many of us. Not because it's light, but because it’s what we've been trained to focus on.
However, if you’re like me and you’re walking along the path of a success that feels nourishing, learning a rhythm of rest that matches the pace of your body, your mind, and your soul, is ESSENTIAL.
(Otherwise, you’ll never, ever ‘get there’.)
Why Rest Feels Unsafe
The reason why it’s so difficult to rest is because when we pause, the voices show up. Along with the really uncomfortable sensations related to a fear of NOT BEING ‘ENOUGH’.
Each of us has different dominant fears that arise to the surface when we stop focusing on the things to be done and have our minds empty enough for the inner thoughts to bubble up.
For me, resting can often feel like I’m being chased. Like I need to keep moving, otherwise ‘something bad’ is going to happen.
Productivity for me is tied to money, and money is tied to survival. When I pause, it feels like I’m risking everything.
As dramatic as it sounds, resting (for me) feels like I’m going to die.
You might experience the same, or something different when you rest (i.e. guilt). It’s useful to pay attention to what the story is for you.
Becoming conscious of what surfaces when you rest is the beginning of transforming it.
Why Scheduled Rest Doesn’t Work
I used to try to schedule rest like a calendar task. Like - ‘Every Wednesday from 2 to 5 pm, I’ll rest’.
It never worked out, long term.
This is because we are not machines. Our bodies do not run on a fixed schedule. They’re dynamic.
Your energy shifts DAILY, even hourly.
What you need on one day is never exactly what you need on another.
Instead of trying to rest or fit in breaks on a fixed schedule, practice dynamic rest. Dynamic rest is when you tune into your body multiple times a day and ask it what it needs. If it needs rest, and you have the space in your schedule to do so, then rest! But if it feels fired up, creative, and ready to move, then take some action!!!!
THE GOAL IS PRESENCE.
Rebuilding the Relationship with Your Body
Rest begins with awareness.
You have to get used to the practice of paying attention to what you’re body is feeling at various parts of the day.
I personally built this ‘muscle’ through a yoga practice. It taught me how to pay attention to the physical sensations, and stay mindful on and off the mat.
Any sort of somatic practice (even just a regular workout practice) can help you achieve this same level of presence.
And once you do, you’ll be able to catch the signs of burnout or distress, before its too late.
Fitting In Rest: The 3 Types of Tasks
One framework I use to make space for rest in my schedule is categorizing all of my tasks into three categories:
Non-negotiable Tasks – Things that I HAVE to do (like client sessions or making meals)
Adaptable Tasks – Things I’d prefer to do on a certain timeline but can move around if needed (like cleaning the house, or recording my podcast)
Bonus tasks – Things that would be nice to get to, but are not essential (like organizing my pantry)
When energy is low and my body is calling for rest, I prioritize my non-negotiables and only show up for the adaptable tasks if I have the energy to.
When I recover, I get back to it.
You Don’t Need a Diagnosis to Accommodate For Yourself
You don’t need a diagnosis to honour your limits.
If you need more rest than your friends or family, that doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It just means you have a different body and therefore, different needs.
At some point, we have to let go of waiting for external permission and just start giving ourselves what we know we need. Without the self-judgement.
Taking a random 2 hour nap in the middle of Wednesday is ‘not normal’. But sometimes, it’s exactly what I need to do so I can show up to my responsibilities on Thursday and Friday.
You Don’t Need to Earn Rest, But You Do Need to Practice It
Rest brings up resistance. But it also brings the peace, clarity, and capacity you’re craving.
Enjoying the ‘fruits of your labour’ and actually doing the labour are two different states of being.
If you only focus on one, you’ll feel it.
Success that feels as good as it looks REQUIRES learning how to rest in rhythm with YOUR system.
Rest isn’t optional within The Overflow Method framework. It’s necessary.
I hope this post gives you permission to start.
